A tragic incident unfolded on the Blue Ridge Parkway over the Easter weekend when Jie Huang, a 40-year-old man from Plymouth, North Carolina, suffered a fatal fall during a hike. The accident occurred near milepost 297 by the Boone Fork Trail, as reported by WBTV. Huang, described as an afternoon hiker, fell into the water surrounding the trail, known for its proximity to both the Boone Fork and Hebron Falls.
The Blue Ridge Parkway’s External Affairs Office confirmed the time of the report to be just before 3 p.m. on Friday. Huang’s injuries were fatal and he died at the scene. Despite efforts by emergency responders, Huang was unable to be revived, as detailed in a press release obtained by the Charlotte Observer, which stated, "Rangers, along with Watauga and Blowing Rock EMS, responded to the scene, recovered the hiker, and performed CPR."
The incident prompted a response from National Park Service Law Enforcement rangers, Watauga, and Blowing Rock EMS who performed CPR on Huang. However, he was pronounced deceased at the site of his fall. A preliminary investigation suggests that the injuries sustained from his fall were the cause of death. The Blue Ridge Parkway is approximately a 95-mile drive northwest from Charlotte, thereby marking the trail both as a site of natural beauty and, in Huang’s case, tragedy.
Further details regarding the accident have not been released as the investigation continues. WataugaOnline reported that, no additional details are available at this time. The Blue Ridge Parkway remains one of the nation's most visited national park units, drawing millions each year, though it is not without its risks particularly for those engaging in outdoor activities along its scenic routes and trails.
