To improve road safety in Pottawatomie County, deputies recently carried out a highway safety shift and stopped a motorcyclist for speeding in a construction zone on Highway 177. According to a post from the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office, the rider was going at "excessively high" speeds, highlighting the risks and call for "vigilant driving.". The office stressed the importance of following speed limits, especially in construction areas, and said they are continuing efforts to enforce speed rules and encourage safe driving across the county.
As per the social media release, the sheriff's office is not limiting their monitoring to Highway 177. Deputies are also ensuring compliance with speed limits on Moccasin Trail, Garretts Lake, and Hazeldale roads, inadvertently encouraging drivers to maintain control over their vehicles at lower speeds suited for safe travel. The office seeks to foster a "unified commitment to road safety and responsibility" across various thoroughfares.
The statement also outlined future plans for the traffic enforcement initiative, which will focus on the southern part of Pottawatomie County. Targeted areas will include Highway 59B, Highway 59, Highway 39, and adjacent county roads. As mentioned by the Sheriff's Office, the goal of these actions is to foster a "culture of safety, respect, and community spirit." Motorists are encouraged to "slow down and pay attention" to ensure not only their own safety but also that of the broader community. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office aims to promote a "safer and brighter future."
In addition to regular road safety operations, the Sheriff's Office reminded the public about the nature of highway safety shifts. These shifts occur outside of normal patrols, with deputies sometimes working on their days off to focus on grant-funded assignments. The goal is to give special attention to certain roads "without taking away from routine patrol operations." Through these efforts, Pottawatomie County aims to patrol not only for legal compliance but also for the well-being of the community.
