Colorado's regional workforce and infrastructure needs are under the microscope as leaders across Pueblo and Southern Colorado come together to forge a path towards economic development tailored to the region's unique needs. According to OEDIT, a recent Regional Talent Summit at the Pueblo Convention Center saw the convergence of industry and community stakeholders discussing career pathways and tactical workforce plans to support burgeoning industries such as advanced manufacturing, construction, and technology.
Gov. Polis emphasized the state's commitment to local readiness amidst economic growth, stating, “As Colorado's economy grows, we're making sure local workforces are ready to support the industries driving Colorado’s future,” as per OEDIT. The summit highlighted the importance of career pathways that not only match employer skill demands but also bolster regional economic goals. The summit's focus revolved around the broadband expansion and workforce needs in a 13-county area, as efforts intensify to bridge the gap between available jobs and skilled labor.
Eve Lieberman, OEDIT Executive Director, emphasized a strategic approach during the summit: “Today’s Regional Talent Summit will result in a tactical action plan developed by community and business leaders from Pueblo and across Southern Colorado to meet the region’s unique goals and needs,” as obtained by OEDIT. The summit marks an effort by public, private, and nonprofit sectors to craft opportunities that align with the region's economic objectives and address the need for trained and reliable workers in Southern Colorado.
The event was the third of seven planned across Colorado, spurred by HB24-1365, and builds on the Opportunity Now grant program that has distributed nearly $90 million to 89 recipients for talent development initiatives. Notable mentions at the summit included Colorado State University-Pueblo's $1.4 million grant to train nurses and Emergent Campus, Trinidad’s $3.5 million effort to invigorate tech job growth in rural areas. Servicios de la Raza was also in the spotlight with their $900,000 grant to tackle talent shortages in key sectors. The collaborative engagement of these entities, along with Skill Distillery and other recipients, illuminates the cross-sector push to spur regional development.
