The National Weather Service in Denver has issued a Red Flag Warning for most of the Plains, in effect from 11 AM to 7 PM MDT today. Residents along and north of I-70 should be on alert, as critical fire weather conditions are expected due to a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures, which can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
This warning affects Larimer, Boulder, Jefferson, Weld, Morgan, Adams, Arapahoe, Elbert, Lincoln, Logan, Washington, Sedgwick, and Phillips counties. Under these conditions, the risk for wildfires is significantly heightened. "Critical fire weather conditions will be in place across much of the plains today due to gusty northwest winds of 35 to 45 mph, and low humidity," as reported by the National Weather Service. The area will see northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with the possibility of gusts reaching up to 45 mph, and humidity levels may drop as low as 14 percent.
Meanwhile, Denver's weather will fluctuate in the coming days, with today's high expected to be a breezy 71 degrees and a low of 39 tonight. The forecast suggests mostly sunny conditions throughout the week, with the temperature climbing into the 80s on Saturday, offering a brief reprieve before a chance of showers and a possible mix of rain and snow showers early next week.
Beyond today's warning, locals should remain vigilant for the next few days. The National Weather Service cautions that above-normal temperatures and dry conditions will remain across the area this week. Breezy conditions at times will lead to elevated to potentially critical fire weather conditions across the plains, foothills, and South Park. Saturday and Sunday are anticipated to be particularly precarious, due to expected high wind speeds. Officials urge residents to exercise caution and avoid activities that could ignite a wildfire.
