Renton is rolling out its first-ever Zero Waste Plan to address growing waste concerns, especially with the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill approaching capacity in 15 years. The plan focuses on recycling, composting, and reuse, with a 10-year roadmap aimed at sustainable funding and waste prevention. The Renton Public Works Department is also seeking public feedback through the "Zero Waste Plan Your Voice Renton" page, as reported by the City of Renton.
The city is also offering a Youth Academy for middle schoolers, running from July 14-17, to give them hands-on experience in public safety careers. The program, created by local police and law enforcement agencies, is open to Renton residents in grades 6-8, with priority given to those in the Renton School District. Sign-ups close on May 2.
Renton’s Utility Tax Rebate program is available for residents aged 61 or older or those permanently disabled, providing financial assistance if income requirements are met. Applications open on April 15 and close on June 15.
The city is also recruiting for its Chief’s Community Council, an advisory group for residents to provide input on law enforcement practices. The council meets every other month and is looking for a diverse group of voices. Applications are available on the City of Renton's website in multiple languages.
The City of Renton is also seeking feedback from residents on their waste collection services, with a survey open until April 27. This will help guide the selection of a future waste provider.
Finally, upcoming events include City Council meetings every Monday at 7 p.m., as well as Dragon Egg hunts, garage sales, BBQs, and shredding events throughout April. More details are available on the city’s official channels.
