Coweta County has a new leader at the helm of the State Court Adult Probation. Robert Carawan, an experienced law enforcement professional, has been elevated to Chief Probation Officer, taking over on April 28, the Coweta County announced. The promotion comes after the previous chief, Jeff Rogers, transitioned to Warden of Coweta County Prison. Carawan, stepping into his new role, brought in a history of dedication from his time as an Atlanta police officer and a military background prior to serving the community in Coweta since 2010.
Joining the county over a decade ago as a Probation Officer, Carawan climbed the ranks to Assistant Chief in late 2019, having been promoted. With Carawan at the leadership, the community expects the department to navigate the nuanced space of correction and rehabilitation, balancing the scales of justice with human compassion. His academic foundation in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University and his extensive career spanning 27 years with the Atlanta Police Department anchors this next chapter of service in Coweta County.
Carawan, conveying his readiness for the chief role, said, "I am excited to take on the role of Chief Probation Officer of State Court Adult Probation," in an announcement obtained by Coweta County's news release. He emphasized a team-centric approach and the value in treating individuals fairly, reflecting his commitment to see offenders make significant strides towards positive change. His personal investment in the community is evident: he resides there with Kim, his wife, and their two adult children, and together they run Peachtree Dive Center, further rooting their presence in the local sphere.
The county expressed their anticipation for the probation department's trajectory under Carawan, taking note of his philosophy of respect and authority in working with offenders. “We have a great team and good rapport with the offenders we work with," Carawan told Coweta County, highlighting the established connections critical for successful reintegration of individuals into society.
