Sacramento is taking a tech-savvy leap forward by being the first in the nation to employ bus-mounted technology for automated bike lane enforcement. Through a partnership with Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) and the City of Sacramento, the new system targets vehicles illegally parked in both bus stops and bike lanes, utilizing AI and machine learning from Hayden AI to make roads safer for cyclists.

Expanding on an already implemented bus stop enforcement program that outfits 100 SacRT buses with camera systems, this innovative initiative is all about enhancing road safety and keeping bike lanes clear. "We’re proud to be the first city in the country to use this technology to help keep our bike lanes clear," Staci Hovermale, Parking Services Manager, told Sacramento City Express. "This tool helps us enforce existing parking rules more effectively, improving safety for cyclists and ensuring everyone shares the road responsibly."

When vehicles unlawfully occupy bike lanes, they create hazards by forcing cyclists to maneuver into adjacent traffic. Automated bike lane enforcement aims to keep these lanes accessible, promoting greater safety and smoother travel for cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists alike. Starting Monday, warning notices were issued to drivers violating these rules, with actual fines set to begin on June 13.

Drivers should be aware of how this program operates: cameras on buses capture short videos and photos of vehicles' license plates obstructing bike lanes. This collected evidence, complete with timestamps and locations, is sent for review and violation processing by the City of Sacramento. "Keeping bike lanes clear is an important part of making Sacramento a place where everyone can thrive," Henry Li, SacRT General Manager/CEO, explained to Sacramento City Express.

Lending support to Sacramento's pioneering steps for bike lane safety is Hayden AI, who is providing the camera technology, and Duncan Solutions which handles the violation processing software. All potential violations are reviewed by City of Sacramento parking enforcement officers before any fines are issued. "We’re honored to support Sacramento in leading the way for bike lane safety," said Lisa Schule, Executive Chairwoman of Hayden AI, highlighting the city's role in advancing urban mobility and safety.
