Sacramento's Earth Day events this year saw an impressive turnout of volunteers eager to get their hands dirty for a good cause. Early ahead of the official Earth Day, on April 5, some 320 community members contributed their time and energy across nine different sites within the city, as part of the City of Sacramento’s annual initiative to beautify urban spaces and engage locals in sustainability efforts.

The series of clean-ups and planting sessions were spearheaded by the City's Office of Climate Action & Sustainability (OCAS) and garnered support from several municipal departments and community organizations. According to a report by Sacramento City Express, Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment department, specifically Landscape & Learning crews, the Department of Utilities, and the Community Engagement Team played an key roles in the day's success, with additional assistance from the Community Emergency Response Team, Recycling and Solid Waste, the Department of Community Response, and the Office of Emergency Management.

Not only were the events popular with local residents who donated their time, but they also had backing from city councilmembers and Park Commissioners. These leaders aided in promotion and were on hand to help with activities and keep spirits high with refreshments for hard-working volunteers.

Together, the volunteers achieved substantial results, planting over 220 native and drought-tolerant plants, spreading more than 80 cubic yards of mulch, and removing upwards of 11,000 pounds of trash and debris from around the city. These efforts not only served to prep Sacramento for the upcoming Earth Day but also signified a growing movement among cities to embrace community-driven environmental stewardship.
