The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department has authorized overnight camping in city parks for Easter weekend. The standard curfew will be lifted from 11 p.m. tomorrow until 11 p.m. on Easter Sunday, April 20, according to an official city news release.
This year, a designated list of parks is open for overnight camping, including locations such as Brackenridge Park and McAllister Park. Camping will also be permitted at sites like Lions Field and Southside Lions Park East. However, specific areas—including the Avenue B Brackenridge Parking Garage and the Island House and gym areas at Woodlawn Lake Park—will remain closed, to help manage traffic flow and preserve access for day-use visitors.
The Parks and Recreation Department is advising park visitors to bring trash bags and dispose of waste properly. Campers are instructed to use designated recycling bins for plastics and cans, as glass containers are not permitted within park areas. Volunteers will be on-site to provide additional trash bags and support recycling efforts.
The San Antonio Fire Department released safety guidelines for grilling, advising individuals not to leave lit grills unattended and to maintain a safe distance for children and pets. The guidance includes avoiding loose clothing near open flames and not using water to extinguish grease fires, which should be reported to 911. For ash disposal, the department instructs that ashes should be allowed to cool, wrapped in foil, and placed in the trash rather than recycling bins.
Camping during Easter may involve increased noise levels at locations such as Brackenridge Park and Woodlawn Lake Park, where wildlife management activities are taking place. These efforts include the use of auditory deterrents to manage bird populations. According to city officials, these methods are approved and overseen by the USDA Wildlife Services Division. Individuals seeking quieter conditions may consider alternative camping locations.
