According to a social media post by the Lewisville Police Department, Newkirk began his work in law enforcement with them in 1995, retiring in 2016. His post-retirement path saw him joining the San Saba Police Department in 2021, where he continued to make significant contributions until his recent passing.
"Steve was more than a colleague—he was a part of our Lewisville PD family," the statement from Lewisville PD said, signifying the loss felt by those who knew him professionally. Known for his dedication, Newkirk served the department in various capacities, including as a detective after initially joining the San Saba team, and eventually taking on the role of Police Chief in 2024. His wife, Kristy, also served as a dispatcher for the Lewisville department, deepening the bond between the Newkirk family and the local law enforcement community.
Newkirk's appointment as the Chief of Police came after his predecessor, Chief Bauer, stepped down, a role to which he was appointed in 2024. In the words of the San Saba Police Department, his leadership continued to foster strength and unity within the department. The department's tribute to Newkirk highlighted his positive spirit and influence, both in the immediate law enforcement community and the wider San Saba area.
