On Tax Day, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) released a statement calling for changes to fiscal policy focused on working families. According to information from his official Senate website, Gallego addressed concerns about recent decisions he said could impact the timing of tax refunds and highlighted how those changes may affect different income groups.

"Because of President Trump, Elon Musk, and their DOGE cronies, Americans will be waiting longer for their refunds so that billionaires can get away with cheating on their taxes," Gallego expressed. He went on to argue that the focus should shift from "further enriching billionaires" to supporting "hardworking families who need it most." In an apparent effort to quickly to follow through, Gallego has thrown his support behind a series of legislative proposals, as stated his press release.

Central to his agenda is the American Family Act, which seeks to substantially increase the Child Tax Credit, making it more accessible and valuable to families across income levels. The proposed legislation aims to hike the credit to amounts ranging from $3,600 to $6,360, depending on the child's age, and to push for monthly delivery to help families manage their finances. The act also plans to tweak the tax system to protect the credit's value against inflation.

Besides the American Family Act, Gallego supports the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit Enhancement Act, which would increase the maximum credit to $4,000 per child and make it refundable to aid low-income families. Simultaneously, the Tax Cut for Workers Act is also on his legislative agenda, promising to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit and widen the eligible age range. Not one to disregard employment-associated costs, Gallego also backs the Tax Fairness for Workers Act, which allows taxpayers to deduct expenses such as union dues and travel costs. Meanwhile, the Tax Cuts for Veterans Act would completely remove federal tax on military retirement benefits, leading to significant savings for long-serving members of the armed forces.

In critique of practices that promote fiscal inequality, Gallego supports bills like the No Tax Breaks for Outsourcing Act and the No Tax Breaks for Union Busting Act. His legislative push aims to correct the tax scale to favor not those perched in their high towers of wealth, but instead the everyday citizen, striving for a fair chance at economic stability.
