Thousands of Memphis residents found themselves grappling with the impact of severe weather as power outages washed over the region. Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) confirmed that Central High School and the surrounding Midtown area lost power Wednesday morning, with the outage extending its reach to a total of 6,627 customers, according to an WREG report. A grandparent, Franklin Sorrell, expressed his concern to WREG, saying, “My grandson he had called and said the lights were off, and that’s why I came out to get him to take him home because the storm is getting ready to travel.”
Worsened by the severe weather, nearly 8,000 customers found themselves without electricity in various neighborhoods, especially South Memphis, Midtown, and the Medical District. While trying to address the outages resulted in crew responses to downed powerlines at South Cleveland and Lamar Avenue, the cause behind the power failure is under investigation, and no restoration time has been announced, shared WREG. In a statement obtained by ABC24, MLGW has yet to offer specifics on the situation.
The outage, reflecting its severity on the MLGW power outage map, reverberated across the county, compelling thousands to confront the disruption without electricity. FOX13 noted that their team would keep the public informed as more information becomes available.
As the city works through the aftermath of the storm, Memphis residents are left to navigate the challenges posed by the outages. For the latest developments on this ongoing issue, customers are encouraged to check the MLGW power outage map, promising updates but sharing little comfort in the immediacy of the present blackouts.
