Rural health care in Pennsylvania is facing a significant challenge due to a shortage of health care professionals, particularly in remote areas. To address this issue, members of the Shapiro Administration visited Blair County to highlight proposed funding aimed at strengthening the rural health care workforce. Governor Josh Shapiro's 2025-26 budget includes investments to support this effort, as per the official Pennsylvania government website.
Health Secretary Dr. Debra Bogen and Human Services Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh outlined a strategy to support rural hospitals, including incentives to recruit and retain health care professionals, such as behavioral health providers, in rural communities. There is a notable difference in access to primary care, with one doctor serving 522 residents in rural areas compared to urban areas, where the ratio is much better.
Dr. Trina Abla, Chief Medical Officer at Penn Highlands Healthcare, discussed the challenges rural hospitals face due to the shortage of medical staff. State officials are continuing their visits to rural hospitals and speaking with health care workers to address the workforce shortage, which is crucial for both the health of rural residents and the overall integrity of the state's health care system.
