The Shelby County Sheriff's Office opened its doors to residents this past Friday, inviting them to partake in the 2025 spring session of the Sheriff Floyd Bonner, Jr. Citizens’ Academy. The program, which took place at the SCSO training academy, aims to build stronger community ties and offers an in-depth look into law enforcement operations.

During the ceremony, Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner, flanked by SCSO command staff and leadership, extended gratitude to the numerous individuals who came forward to engage with the sheriff's office on this unique educational venture. As they thanked the participants, who welcomed the six-week Citizens’ Academy, will provide an opportunity that allows them to understand the daily operations and general information about the sheriff's office internals deeply.

According to a social media post from the SCSO, the program 'kicked off' on April 1 and was met with enthusiasm from the community. Participants are expected to gain firsthand experience, ranging from understanding the complexities of law enforcement, building partnership skills, and effectively demystifying the oft-misconstrued nature of police work.

As reported by the SCSO on Facebook, "the spring 2025 Citizens’ Academy will allow these community members to gain a better understanding of the daily operations, general information, and inner workings of the Shelby County Sheriff ’s Office."
