A troubling incident shook up Simi Valley yesterday as a street confrontation escalated to a dangerous level. The event took place on Cochran Street near Stearns Street at approximately 11:29 A.M. when a passerby approached a speeding driver, only to be met with a firearm and a derogatory slur. The Simi Valley Police Department reported responding to reports of a firearm being brandished in public. The victims, who had been walking along the street, claimed they were merely attempting to alert the driver to his excessive speed before the situation took a frightening turn.
Upon the officers' arrival, the victims supplied a description of both the vehicle and the man behind the wheel, who had aimed a semi-automatic handgun at them while also uttering a homophobic slur. An in-field identification followed, where suspect Andrew Chase was positively identified as the aggressor, confirming the victims' account. Chase, a 24-year-old resident of Simi Valley, was arrested, and a subsequent search of his vehicle revealed a loaded handgun registered in his name.
The confrontation has now led to Chase facing serious charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, a firearm, and a hate crime. After being taken into custody, he was booked at Ventura County Jail. The details of the charge were published by local authorities, emphasizing the serious nature of the assault and the accompanying hate crime classification due to the alleged use of a homophobic slur during the incident.
