Amid the hum of construction and the everyday bustle of Weslaco, something out of the ordinary turned heads at the FM 1015 and Camino de Verdad intersection. An alligator, spanning more than six feet, was discovered lodged within a storm drain, igniting conversations and surprising local workers. According to a report by TxDOT, the presence of this large reptile was an unexpected twist to what would have otherwise been a typical workday.

David Cano, a TxDOT construction inspector, stumbled upon the gator while rounding a work site. In a statement obtained by TxDOT, Cano said, “I was really surprised to see an alligator like that. Reptile eyes with slits. The sun was peering through, and you could barely see. It was exciting!” His encounter spurred him to quickly reach out for help from animal control and the local game warden to ensure the creature's safe removal.

The animal's rescue was no small task, but the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center, and Alligator Sanctuary stepped forward to extract the animal. Gratefully, the gator, aptly named Stormy in a nod to her unique hideout, was removed from the drain without incident. Stormy's journey from the dark, confined storm drain to the expanse of a sanctuary became a testament to the collaborative effort of local services and wildlife experts.

Following her capture, Stormy was transported to the Alligator Sanctuary, where she will undoubtedly be better suited than the confining quarters of the storm drain. The sanctuary's involvement played a critical role in her relocation. Their ability to not only safely remove but also house and care for the alligator was key, showcasing the importance of such facilities in managing unexpected encounters with wildlife.

From the sidewalks of Weslaco to a new abode, Stormy's surprising adventure serves as a reminder of the wildness that often lurks just beneath the surface of our urban landscapes. It was an ordinary Texas day made extraordinary by the appearance of an animal we're reminded to share this earth with, however infrequently they might choose to make their presence known in our constructed worlds.
