Following a wave of concern and activism from the community, the South Side Area School District's board has voted to refrain from furloughing four teachers who were previously on the chopping block. According to CBS News Pittsburgh, the decision came in the wake of protests by students and strong opposition from union officials. The school board was considering eliminating positions to counteract a declining student population, which had dropped from more than 1,100 to approximately 800. Facing potential cuts were roles in tech education, foreign language, physical education, and a librarian position.

In the days leading up to the pivotal meeting, South Side Education Association President Michael Baker stated, "We have asked throughout the year if the board was considering anything like this, and the answer has been no," CBS News Pittsburgh reported. Additionally, former students voiced their discontent with the proposed changes, reiterating the significant impact these teachers have had on their lives.

Amid rising tensions, approximately a dozen students walked out in protest of the possible furloughs with some students like sophomore Jake Lytle, whose father was among those at risk of being laid off, emphasizing their stakes quoting, "My dad's been teaching over here for over 20 years," in a statement detailed by WTAE.

Even though the board decided not to proceed with the furloughs, discussions around early retirement incentives as a form of reducing staff numbers without compulsory layoffs were also part of the meeting's agenda.
