On Monday, the council authorized a contract to improve the asphalt surfaces of 25 parish-owned roads. This decision is set to affect various streets classified as being in "poor" or "very poor" condition, explicitly trying to efficiently spend local tax dollars on the most critical areas, as per St. Charles Parish.
The initiative to upgrade these roads did not spontaneously arise; it follows a deliberate, analytical approach instituted by President Jewell's administration four years ago. His strategy involves a professional grading system that ranks the conditions of asphalt streets without partiality to their location. The intent is to smartly allocate taxpayer funds. "Four years ago, my administration adopted a system for professionally grading the condition of our asphalt streets," Jewell said, as detailed in St. Charles Parish press release. "This pragmatic approach allows us to target the streets most in need of maintenance—regardless of location—and ensures that we are spending taxpayers’ money wisely."
The 25 roads up for maintenance were singled out through an assessment conducted by a third party, ensuring an impartial selection process. All chosen roads currently rate as "poor" or "very poor" condition. However, roads already slated for comprehensive infrastructure improvements are not included in this maintenance contract. The project is funded through local tax revenue, and Barriere Construction Company, LLC won the maintenance contract with a competitive bid of $2,723,256.00.
Barriere Construction Company is tasked to commence work during the Summer of 2025. St. Charles Parish plans to inform residents well in advance of the scheduled work to minimize inconveniences.
