In a turn of events that bucked the common narrative of street-level crime going unpunished, two St. Louis County men have been handed stiff sentences for robbing dollar stores at gunpoint. In a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Deon Walker, 27 years old, has been sentenced to nearly 12 years behind bars. his accomplice, Samuel Nance, 33, received an even longer sentence of 14 years back in July.
The pair pleaded guilty to a series of charges: two counts of robbery and one count of possession and brandishing of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. These guilty pleas led to their convictions and subsequent sentences. According to details of the crime, on October 9, 2022, Walker and Nance, masked and hooded, took control of a dollar store in Berkeley, Missouri, terrifying employees and customers alike. Walker brandished a firearm, ordering victims to the floor while they emptied the cash register and pilfered cigarettes along with approximately $481.
But the duo's criminal spree didn't end there. In a heist that could have been lifted from a movie, they hit another dollar store within the same hour, this time in Ferguson, Missouri. As noted in the attorney's office's report, Walker again used a handgun to subdue the store's cashier, while Nance attempted to detain a fleeing customer. They managed to make off with another cash drawer and a haul about $486 following the raid.
The case, investigated by the FBI and the Berkeley Police Department, resulted in the duo's capture and conviction. Assistant U.S. Attorney Linda Lane, who led the prosecution, detailed these nail-biting moments that could easily have escalated into further violence.
