The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) in St. Paul recently convened to discuss a range of issues, with a particular highlight being the approval of a major variance for a new supportive housing facility. The agenda results from the public hearing were posted, detailing the board's decisions on various applications and resolutions. Public participation was encouraged, with a call for comments to be submitted by a set deadline before the meeting.
The minutes from the previous meeting on March 3 were approved unanimously, and a resolution for 1070 Jackson Street was deferred for future consideration, as detailed by the Board of Zoning Appeals. The BZA's new business featured an application by Michael Tadros for a major variance sought for a property at 770 University Avenue West.
This proposal sparked controversy as the supportive housing facility desired by Tadros for up to 10 residents is a mere 143 feet from an existing congregate living facility—well below the 1,320 feet required by the zoning code. According to the hearing agenda, a zoning variance of 1,177 feet was thereby approved by a 4-1 vote.
