Residents of Summit County are being targeted by an active scam wave, with perpetrators posing as local law enforcement to exploit the unsuspecting. The Summit County Sheriff's Office warns of scam calls from individuals claiming to represent their office and other agencies. In recent social media updates, the Sheriff's Office advised the public to remain vigilant.
The scam, which relies on a mix of fear and urgency, tricks residents into giving away personal information or money. A Summit County Sheriff's Office post states, "These scams continue hot and heavy in our region, with scammers claiming to be our office and other local law enforcement agencies." The Sheriff's Office stresses the importance of keeping a cool head, not acting hastily, and protecting personal information from these fraudulent schemes.
Law enforcement reminds individuals that legitimate agencies, especially unsolicited ones, will not ask for sensitive information or money over the phone. The Summit County Sheriff's Office says, "If you receive a call like this, pause and think, and DO NOT take any immediate actions or provide any information." Scammers, they note, prey on anxiety, haste, and shame—this triad of emotional manipulation makes the con effective.
