This morning, a police chase initiated from what was reported as a potential car theft in Sterling Heights, Michigan, ended in a damaging crash on Interstate 94. The incident left the 27-year-old Detroit man suspected of driving the stolen vehicle in critical condition after being ejected from the car during the crash.
The Sterling Heights Police received a call around 3:15 a.m. regarding the theft of a car from a driveway near Metropolitan Parkway and Dequindre Road, The Detroit News reported. While combing the area, officers came across a suspicious black Dodge Charger, which, when approached by police, sped off, leading to the chase. The Charger remained undeterred despite officers deploying tire-deflating devices, often referred to as stop sticks.
The chase continued through Warren, onto eastbound I-696, and then westbound I-94, where the driver ultimately lost control, resulting in the car crashing near the Nine Mile exit. According to ClickOnDetroit, the consequence of the high-speed pursuit led to the closure of all lanes on westbound I-94 at 10 Mile as the police conducted their investigation.
The injured man, whose identity was not released at the time of the reports, was swiftly transported to an area hospital following the incident. "Medics took the driver to a hospital," The Detroit News quoted police Captain Mario Bastianelli as saying. Bastianelli also mentioned that the Michigan State Police is taking part in the investigation of the crash. The police have called upon anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward and contact the Sterling Heights Police Investigation Division.
