Tacoma residents and sustainability enthusiasts, mark your calendars for the 17th Annual South Sound Sustainability Expo. In a nod to local advocacy for a greener future, the City of Tacoma invites individuals and families to join this community-oriented event. Scheduled for April 26, from 10 AM to 3 PM, the daylong expo promises engagement and education, free of charge, at the University of Washington Tacoma campus along the picturesque Prairie Line Trail, as per the City of Tacoma.
This year's exposition will spotlight a poignant art piece by Teruko Nimura, current Artist in Residence with the City’s Solid Waste utility. An infusion of culture and environmental consciousness, Nimura's installation "Upstream Together" draws from the Japanese Koinobori tradition to celebrate unity and sustainability through repurposed materials. As an expression of heritage, the installation symbolizes community strength and the potential for sustainable reuse. Nimura's work is not just an exhibit; it embodies a call to environmental action.
The event will also feature an opportunity for participants to bring and exchange greenery during a Plant Swap. Community members are encouraged to contribute plants, cuttings, sanitized pots, starters, or seeds in exchange for new growths. Event-goers can look forward to more hands-on interactions. A sustainability-themed scavenger hunt tailored for kids and arts and crafts opportunities are also part of the day's lineup, ensuring a family-friendly atmosphere brimming with creative learning. It's an opportunity to celebrate and cultivate environmental stewardship among the younger attendees.
