Henson is poised to address the largest graduating class in Spelman College's history at the 138th Commencement Ceremony, where she will also be awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree, as recently announced by the college; Henson, an alumna of a historically Black college and university (HBCU), is celebrated for her acclaimed acting career and dedication to mental health advocacy, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
The ceremony, set to take place on May 18 at the Georgia International Convention Center, will see Henson imparting wisdom to a record 694 graduates, Henson's acting prowess spans roles in "Hidden Figures," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," for which she received an Academy Award nomination and most recently "The Color Purple;" she not only graces the screen with her talent but also uses her voice to champion mental health through her Boris L. Henson Foundation and her bestselling published works, according to 11Alive.
Spelman College Interim President Rosalind "Roz" Brewer expressed the institution's profound respect for Henson, stating, "Spelman College is deeply honored to welcome acclaimed actress and proud HBCU alumna Taraji P. The weekend will further celebrate the intellect and contributions of Black women with Dr. Thema Bryant, former president of the American Psychological Association and an esteemed psychologist, who is slated to deliver the Baccalaureate address on Saturday, May 17, an addition that fortifies the commitment to advocacy and empowerment echoed by the presence of Henson, the extraordinarily large Class of 2025, boasting 446 Bachelor of Arts and 248 Bachelor of Science degrees, bears testament to Spelman's academic resilience and exceptional 76% graduation rate, 11Alive detailed.
