Tragedy has struck again at the Flatbush Gardens complex in Brooklyn, where a 17-year-old boy was critically injured after being shot in the head earlier today. According to Gothamist, the incident occurred near Brooklyn and Foster avenues in East Flatbush just around 12:30 a.m.

The victim was found outside one of the buildings at the sprawling complex and was swiftly taken to Kings County Hospital, where, police say, he is now fighting for his life. Police are still on the hunt for the assailants, but, no immediate arrests have occurred. A similar report by News 12 Brooklyn indicated that the teen was shot at 1402 Brooklyn Ave., and officers spent hours searching for evidence, finding several shell casings at the scene.

Residents of Flatbush Gardens have previously raised concerns about safety in the area, pointing to a harrowing past incident where a man killed two of his neighbors following a noise complaint. Marie Delille, who lost her husband and son in that October 2023 shooting, had warned the building management about the neighbor's threats. Delille has since sued the landlord, with Clipper Management, overseeing Flatbush Gardens, stating they were committed to ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for residents, but declining to comment on the ongoing lawsuit, Gothamist reported.

As for the current investigation, police are now looking for three masked men, who according to News 12 Brooklyn, fled westbound toward New York Avenue post-shooting. It is believed, the suspects and the victim did not know each other. While the NYPD continues to peel back the layers of this case, the violence underscores an ongoing struggle within a community that yearns for peace amongst the chaos of sporadic and ruthless gunfire.

Gun violence statistics in the NYPD’s 67th Precinct, which covers the area encompassing East Flatbush and Remsen Village, appear stagnant compared to last year. There have been nine shootings up until April 27 this year, mirroring the number of shootings that had occurred by the same time in 2024, according to data from the NYPD shared by Gothamist.
