The Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO), Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), and local law enforcement are increasing efforts this April for Operation Hands Free. According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, this initiative, in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), focuses on enforcing the state's Hands-Free Law during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The law prohibits drivers from using a cell phone or mobile device with any part of their body while driving.
The crackdown, which began on Tuesday with an enforcement event at the Shelby County Sheriff's Office substation in Arlington, aims to reduce distracted driving incidents. Violating the Hands-Free Law (T.C.A. § 55-8-199) can result in points on a driver's record. Drivers are encouraged to visit www.HandsFreeTN.com for more information on the law.
Operation Hands Free seeks to improve road safety and reduce accidents caused by distracted driving.
