Calling all Thurston County residents who have a stake in local zoning matters: an open house is slated for April 28 where the public will be provided with details regarding the proposed Black Lake Quarry Land Use and Zoning Amendment. This will be an opportunity to directly engage with county staff from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at McLane-Black Lake Fire Station 95, as reported by Thurston County officials.
The issue at hand is a landowner's proposal to reclassify roughly 270 acres at 4741 88th Ave SW, transitioning it from rural residential zoning to rural resource industrial zoning, a change that could significantly reshape the local landscape and impact it carries for surrounding communities. Drop in anytime between those hours, and county officials will be available to answer questions and provide information, although no formal presentation will be given.
Thurston County has opened up avenues for community members to learn more about the project and submit their thoughts via the county's website at www.ThurstonPlanning.org by searching "Black Lake Quarry." Alternatively, interested parties can reach out to associate planner Claire Swearingen at [email protected] or call her directly at (360) 968-9989.
Recognizing the need for inclusivity, the county is also offering disability accommodations; requests can be made by calling the Reasonable Accommodation Coordinator at least three days in advance of the meeting at (360) 786-5440, and individuals with speech or hearing impairments may get in touch via Washington Relay: 711 or (800) 833-6388. This open house stands as part of a larger dialogue, one that encompasses the potential industrial future of Black Lake Quarry—and the community's role in shaping it.
