Last night's game at T-Mobile Park didn't go as planned for the Seattle Mariners, whose starting pitcher Emerson Hancock had a night he'd quickly like to forget. The Detroit Tigers pounced early, generating a six-run first inning that essentially set the tone for what ended up a 9-6 defeat for the home team.
Hancock, taking the mound for his season debut, struggled mightily to find his rhythm. He was ultimately able to only retire two batters before getting the hook – one via a strikeout and the other caught stealing. According to FOX 13 Seattle, Hancock's evening ended after "giving up seven hits with a walk in facing nine batters" and being on the receiving end of Javier Báez's two-run double. He was pulled from the game after throwing just 39 pitches.
Detroit’s offensive onslaught was led by Riley Greene with a homer and Báez’s key double, as reported by KOMO News. While the Tigers bounced back from a sweep at the hands of the Dodgers earlier, this victory marked a positive upswing, as multiple players stepped up to the plate—quite literally. Báez, Dillon Dingler, and Trey Sweeney each notched three hits in the game, making it a collaborative effort to secure their first win of the season.
Despite the rough start for Seattle, the team did manage to find some offensive firepower of their own. Randy Arozarena, Cal Raleigh, and Luke Raley all sent balls out of the park, showcasing individual moments of prowess. Julio Rodríguez also contributed with two hits and scored twice, but it wasn't enough to fully close the gap created by Detroit's early runs.
As the Mariners look to rebound from this loss, fans and management alike will no doubt be keenly observing to see how Emerson Hancock can adjust moving forward. A first outing like this isn't what you hope for from any pitcher, but it's crucial to not get bogged down early on in the season. Resilience will be key for Hancock and the Mariners as they continue to chase the wins that will hopefully come with more experience and shake off the rough edges shown last night.
