Travelers traversing the Tahoe East Shore should brace for delays as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) commences its extended highway repaving efforts starting on Monday, April 21. According to a Nevada Department of Transportation announcement, initial work will target U.S. 50, with single lane closures expected from Sunday evenings through Friday midday. Motorists will navigate these restrictions at various points between Spooner Summit and the Nevada/California border, taking care to maintain travel through at least one lane in each direction.
The project, spanning two seasons, forecasts more extensive activity from May 1, necessitating further reductions across U.S. 50's lanes. Motorists can anticipate reduced speeds to 35mph in work zones, moderate travel delays, and intermittent sidewalk closures, particularly within the casino corridor, yet pedestrian access will persist. Lane closures are set to pause during major holidays and event days, mitigating potential traffic snarls on these occasions. This comprehensive NDOT initiative aims to improve the approximately 13 miles stretch that has not received full attention since 2007.
NDOT's overhaul includes stripping three inches off the aging road surface to lay fresh asphalt, aiming to furnish the estimated 26,000 daily drivers with a smoother, safer ride. To enhance roadway safety further, new measures will be instituted. These include the addition of a two-foot separation between lanes via double yellow lines between Spooner Summit and Glenbrook, the installation of centerline rumble strips, and upscaling roadside defenses with concrete barriers. Another key element is the drainage improvement which will alleviate water ponding — a common irritant for drivers post-storms.
Connectivity is also under consideration, with the integration of a fiber optic trunk line designed to not only expand NDOT’s communications network but also to facilitate intelligent transportation systems, and to support other communication services. As part of a broader Tahoe East Shore Corridor Management Plan, developed through public and stakeholder involvement, this project lays the foundation for future enhancements geared towards efficiency and overall traffic wellbeing.
