In a collective nod to the city's educational strides, Tulsa area representatives have acknowledged significant improvements within Tulsa Public Schools. Following an announcement that saw 13 schools removed from federal improvement designations, Reps. Chris Banning of Bixby, Mark Tedford and Mike Lay both of Jenks, and Rob Hall of Tulsa, issued a statement expressing their commendations over the progress demonstrated by the students, educators, and families involved.
The affected schools are now free from the Continuous School Improvement (CSI) list and the Most Rigorous Intervention list, these lists part of the Every Student Succeeds Act which undergo evaluation every three years to determine which institutions require additional support due to factors like academic performance and graduation rates, according to a joint statement obtained by the Oklahoma House of Representatives. "This kind of growth takes time, hard work, and a lot of heart," the legislators expressed.
Among the schools celebrating their exit from federal oversight are Unity Learning Academy, Edison Middle School, and Tulsa MET High School, along with the seven others who either made significant academic gains or sustained the progress identified in a previous January 2024 update. The advancement of these schools has been a communal effort, as some that met early exit criteria chose to continue receiving support, showcasing a dedication to ongoing betterment.
