A man from Turner Falls has entered a guilty plea for the possession of child pornography in a federal court in Springfield, Massachusetts. Named Edward Dunphy, aged 79, he admitted to the charges before U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni. His sentencing date is set for July 30, 2025, following an indictment by a federal grand jury back in August 2023, according to the Department of Justice.
Authorities were able to identify Dunphy through an investigation that focused on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks. A search executed on May 18, 2023, uncovered over 340,000 files containing child sexual abuse material located on computers and external hard drives in Dunphy's residence. Investigators have to painstakingly examine each file to ascertain the extent of Dunphy's involvement in the distribution or production of this illegal material.
The crime for which Dunphy has pleaded guilty can carry a heavy sentence, ranging from a minimum of 10 years up to 20 years in prison. In addition, should the court find it justified, he is also facing a minimum of five years to potentially a lifetime of supervised release and may have to pay a fine that could total up to $250,000.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley, along with Randy Maloney, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service, Boston Field Office, publicized the guilty plea. They also acknowledged the valuable assistance provided by the Montague Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian J. Sullivan of the Criminal Division is tasked to lead the prosecution's efforts in this case. Justice, though often slow to unfold, aims to ensure that those guilty of exploiting the innocent will ultimately be held accountable for their actions.
