
Tragedy struck Tangipahoa Parish on Friday as two individuals perished in unrelated traffic incidents, according to the Louisiana State Police. The first accident occurred on LA Hwy 442 near Duhe Road, where 34-year-old Jonathan Schroeder lost control of his vehicle, resulting in a fatal collision with several trees. Authorities reported that Schroeder was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. The second incident took place later that same evening, involving a pedestrian, 60-year-old William Traylor, who was struck and killed by a 2019 Nissan Pathfinder on Interstate 55. Traylor, unfortunately, entered the highway's right lane where he was hit, and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Nissan sustained minor injuries and, was also taken to a hospital where they were treated. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both individuals, as part of the investigation, Louisiana State Police stated.
In their public address, Louisiana State Police emphasized the importance of road safety, urging all motorists and pedestrians to adhere to traffic laws and exercise caution. They highlighted that actions such as not driving impaired, fatigued, or distracted, as well as the proper use of seatbelts, are key factors in preventing road fatalities. They also pointed out the significance of these actions in improving the likelihood of surviving a crash.
State police reminded pedestrians of the legal prohibition of walking on interstates, unless in emergencies. "In areas where pedestrian traffic is allowed, it is essential to stay alert, walk facing oncoming traffic, wear reflective clothing, and avoid distractions," they stated, emphasizing that these safety measures can help prevent accidents.
