Allegan County Sheriff's Office reported a close call for two kayakers on the Kalamazoo River this past Sunday. The individuals were rescued near Trowbridge Township after their kayak collided with a fallen log and capsized. According to FOX 17, the incident occurred off 32nd Street, where deputies found the kayakers in distress, having suffered minor injuries and cold exposure.
As a precautionary measure, officials are advising against any recreational activities on the river. Both kayakers were treated at the scene for their injuries, which were considered to be minor. The sheriff's office urged the public not to go on the Kalamazoo River because of "high water levels, cold water temperatures and downed trees from recent storms," a release read, as reported by WOODTV. The water conditions are currently deemed unsafe due to the aftermath of last week's storms, which have led to high water levels and other hazardous obstacles.
The rescue operation, which took place around 5:20 p.m., was supported by multiple agencies including Allegan City Police Department, Allegan Fire District, Life EMS, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. "Both of the kayakers were located and treated for minor injuries and cold exposure," the Allegan County Sheriff's Office said in a statement sourced by WZZM 13.
Due to recent events, authorities are warning people to stay away from the Kalamazoo River until conditions improve. The Allegan County Sheriff's Office is advising residents and visitors to avoid water activities in affected areas for safety.
