University of Texas football player Nicolai "Nick" Brooks, an 18-year-old freshman offensive lineman, faced arrest in downtown Austin on charges of driving while intoxicated (DWI), as reported by KXAN. The Austin Police Department reportedly stopped Brooks due to speeding in the 900 block of West 6th Street shortly after 2 a.m. last Sunday.
After pulling him over, officers found a gold vape pen with a marijuana leaf on it and "think, amber liquid" in Brooks's right pocket, the affidavit stated. Despite testing for a 0.00 blood alcohol content, officers deduced Brooks was "intoxicated due to the introduction of cannabis/CNS depressants" and deemed him "unable to operate a vehicle safely," as the arrest affidavit accessed by KXAN outlined.
Brooks was booked into Travis County jail at 3:43 a.m. and later released on the same day at 7:39 p.m., on a personal recognizance bond after his bond was initially set at $3,000, according to information obtained by CBS Austin. Recognized as a 4-star recruit from Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia, Brooks is listed as 6 feet 7 inches tall and 353 pounds on the current Longhorns roster.
In response to the incident, Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian stated, "We're aware of the situation with Nick Brooks, have talked with him and are gathering information. We will continue to monitor the legal process and address this situation within the team at the appropriate time," a sentiment that was shared by KXAN.
