The University of Texas at El Paso has convincingly shattered its record for its annual Raise Your Pick UTEP Giving Day, rallying to amass over $390,000 in contributions from more than 2,500 donors. Last year, the university had set its high-water mark with a $342,000 haul, but this year's initiative proved to be even more successful, drawing in funds that are earmarked to support a suite of student-centric programs.
UTEP President Heather Wilson expressed gratitude, as obtained by UTEP Newsfeed, saying, "Thank you to El Paso and the Miner community for raising your picks and supporting our students and the work we do here." The donations are set to cover a broad spectrum of needs, and are geared to especially empower students via resources such as the UTEP Career Closet, the UTEP Food Pantry, as well as bolstering academic programs and scholarships. There's a distinct emphasis on aiding students who find themselves grappling with unforeseen financial challenges.
According to UTEP Newsfeed, the fundraising efforts were augmented by matches and challenges from various community and corporate partners, including contributions from the likes of Raiz Federal Credit Union, the El Paso Chihuahuas Foundation, and Marathon Petroleum Corporation. Gary Edens, Ed.D., acting vice president for institutional advancement, highlighted the transformative impact of these donations, telling UTEP, "Every donation helps to change the lives of our students as they work to earn their degrees and achieve their academic and professional goals."
Adding to the festivities, UTEP also hosted a companion block party that provided a space for students, faculty, staff, and alumni to deeply engage with and understand the tangible effects of their philanthropy. Activities varied from philanthropy quizzes to scribbling down heartfelt thank-you notes to donors. The event also featured a quirky 'cash tornado,' where participants could ambitiously snatch at 'Miner Bucks' that can be redeemed to support further university programs.
