Washington Attorney General Nick Brown, along with 20 other attorneys general, is opposing what they view as an abuse of executive power through President Donald Trump's executive orders. The coalition has joined an amicus brief in support of the law firm Susman Godfrey, which has been targeted by the orders due to its involvement in defending the integrity of the 2020 election, as per the Washington State Office of the Attorney General.
The executive orders have imposed punitive measures on employees of firms like Susman Godfrey, affecting their security clearances, hiring, and access to federal facilities. These actions are being challenged in court for their potential unconstitutionality.
Susman Godfrey's Seattle office was specifically mentioned in the orders, but a judge recently issued an injunction temporarily halting their enforcement. The judge stated that the order appeared to be a personal attack on the firm.
The attorneys general argue that these orders undermine the principle that lawyers should be free from government retaliation while representing clients. They warn that such actions could hinder people's ability to access legal representation, especially for those relying on pro bono services. States like Illinois, New Jersey, and Massachusetts are actively involved in this legal challenge, supported by a coalition that includes Arizona, California, and others.
