Washington, D.C. resident Ramon Randall, 37, is confronted with the serious reality of enhanced legal repercussions after a CVS retail theft incident last month. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, a grand jury handed down an indictment on Wednesday, charging Randall with one count of felony second-degree theft.
Randall's arraignment has been set for April 29, following the March 12 incident at a CVS store located at 2009 8th Street NW, where he allegedly attempted to shoplift goods tallying $133.27. The prosecution alleges that during the theft, Randall, equipped with a reusable bag, was spotted packing away various items ranging from toothpaste to socks. "I ain't left the premises!" he reportedly exclaimed when confronted by an MPD officer familiar with him, per the manager's call for police support. The subsequent intervention by the officers thwarted the attempted theft, with the purloined goods being returned to the store manager.
Randall has a history with the law, specifically previous theft convictions, so this is not his first run-in. This checkered past has placed him at risk of a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in jail per count of theft. Although these prior convictions were separate occurrences, they collectively catalyze the possibility of an enhanced sentence under the law.
The case against Randall is being marshaled forward by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Liss, with backing investigations from MPD and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia handling the prosecution side.
