Washington state's transportation budget has rolled into the spotlight, with the House and Senate passing proposed budgets that are now en route to Governor Bob Ferguson's desk this April. Inside these budgets, there's a notable focus on modernizing the region's transportation system, including a hefty $1.9 billion earmarked for ferry services and various infrastructure improvements across Kitsap County.
According to the House Democrats' announcement, investments to tune into public transportation and safety advancements were among the choices made. "Our budget writers had a lot of tough choices to make this year," stated Rep. Greg Nance (D-Kitsap). "I’m grateful for colleagues coming together to support ferry funding and transportation infrastructure for Kitsap."
Digging into the specifics for Kitsap, strategic investment aimed at boosting regional mobility is needed, with funds spanning from ferry construction and maintenance to revamping local supply chains. Highlights include $686 million for public transit improvements offering free rides for youth and $61 million dedicated to the SR 3 Freight Corridor to expedite commute times. Infrastructure upgrades aren't left behind, with $28 million set to enhance facilities like Silverdale Transfer Station and Park & Rides along SR 305 and SR 16. $25 million has also been channeled towards pedestrian and bike access, aiming to modernize the Warren Avenue Bridge along with safer bike lanes and sidewalks on SR 303.
Amidst this budgetary symphony, Rep. Nance, who has championed dependable ferry services during his time in office, made strides with the introduction of the Mosquito Fleet Act (HB 1923)—a legislative effort to ease transport woes faster than new ferries can hit the water. "The House passed the Mosquito Fleet Act with a vote of 87-8," Nance told House Democrats. "Folks across Kitsap and around Puget Sound can’t keep waiting for big new boats to get built, and they’ve enthusiastically voiced their support for this legislation." While support is strong, the Mosquito Fleet Act still awaits further action in the Senate, with a critical deadline looming on Tuesday.
