Motorists in Las Vegas will need to brace for impacts on their nighttime travel plans this weekend, as Las Vegas Paving embarks on a task to add a splash of color to the new Grand Teton Drive overpass bridge. The announced closures on I-11/U.S. 95 will occur from April 20 through 22, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., to accommodate the bridge painting process. According to details from Las Vegas City's announcement, the southbound lanes will be closed beginning Sunday night, with the northbound lanes following suit on Monday.
For the duration of closures, drivers are advised to follow marked detours. The northbound traffic should exit at Durango Drive, advancing north on El Capitan Way, before heading west on Racel Street, and finally rejoining the highway via Sky Canyon Park Drive. The detour route for southbound I-11/U.S. 95 will be directed west to Sky Canyon Park Drive, then south on Grand Canyon Drive, taking an eastward turn onto Farm Road, proceeding south on Oso Blanca Road, and finally north on Durango Drive to find the highway on-ramp. These grueling detours have been devised to redirect the river of nightly commuters and travelers around the construction zone.
Work on the overpass project began on March 31, 2024, and the city of Las Vegas warned of a lengthy 18-month construction period with potential disruptions on not only Grand Teton Drive but also adjacent streets. Lane restrictions have been forecast to last up to 18 months, including some night work as deemed necessary for project completion. This ongoing construction seeks to provide a bridge structure over I-11/U.S. 95 and includes roadway reconstruction, utility relocations, street lighting, and extending a multi-use trail, endeavors that strive to alter the skeletal infrastructure of this sprawling urban body.
As per the $41 million budget, this project has become possible with the funding sourced from the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada and the Federal Highway Administration.
