In a grim reminder of the opioid crisis gripping our nation, a Union County woman has been arrested in connection with a tragic overdose. Marshville, a community reeling from loss, learned that 23-year-old Melissa Thompson of Wingate has been charged with felony Death by Distribution after deputies traced the fentanyl that claimed the life of 30-year-old Cole Manus back to her, as reported by the Union County Sheriff's Office. The incident, which unfolded in early March, has put a spotlight yet again on the harrowing reach of narcotics trafficking.
Responding deputies and EMS worked valiantly in an attempt to save Manus, who was treated at the scene and later at a local hospital. Despite such efforts, he succumbed to the potent drug's effects days later. As revealed on the Union County Sheriff's Office website, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Unit of the UCSO engaged in rigorous investigative work, pinpointing Thompson as the source of the lethal substance.
Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey conveyed his department's relentless pursuit in the wake of the overdose, expressing his hope for some semblance of peace for the grieving Manus family. "Once again, our detectives and deputies have gone above and beyond to locate and apprehend another trafficker who chose to profit from the death of another human being," Cathey affirmed on the Union County Sheriff's Office. In the same statement, Cathey urged those grappling with addiction to seek community support, highlighting available resources for those desiring a different path.
Thompson, now detained with bond set at $205,000, faces the consequences of her alleged involvement in this deadly trade. With the investigation still active, the Sheriff's Office is seeking additional information from the public. They encourage anyone who might shed further light on the case to come forward, providing contact details for the Sheriff’s Office, Union County Crimestoppers, and anonymous options via their website or smartphone app.
