A tragic scene unfolded early Sunday morning in southwest Houston when a woman bicycling was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. Ashley Mae Nelson, 37, was fatally injured while riding her bike across State Highway 6 at the intersection of Empanada Drive, as reported by Click2Houston.

According to Click2Houston, Nelson was traveling from east to west alongside her husband, Wesley Adam Johnson, when she crossed paths with an oncoming red sedan and failed to yield the right of way to the vehicle. Harris County officials reported the accident occurred around 4:30 a.m. The driver of the sedan, identified as 28-year-old Shantia Howard, struck Nelson and fled the scene without stopping to provide assistance. Nelson succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 4:38 a.m.

Howard was later apprehended by law enforcement and has been charged with failure to stop and render aid. "The suspected driver, 28-year-old Shantia Howard, was charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid," Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated in a news release obtained by FOX 26 Houston. Howard has been booked into Harris County Jail as the investigation continues.
