A tragic incident occurred in Oklahoma when a 10-year-old boy was killed in a UTV (utility task vehicle) crash. The accident, which took place on Thursday, also left a 12-year-old girl in critical condition, while a 3-year-old boy was uninjured. According to a KFOR, the crash happened southeast of Prague at the intersection of County Road 3570 and County Road 1070.
The incident unfolded after the young boy, operating a 2023 Yamaha UTV, was driving at an excessive speed and lost control around 7:13 p.m., leading the vehicle to roll. It ended up in a ditch on the west side of the road. Despite seatbelts being available in the vehicle, they were reportedly used only to hastily secure the passengers, not the driver. As per an Oklahoma Highway Patrol statement obtained by KOCO, "seat belts were equipped in the vehicle but were only in use by the passengers."
Emergency services were quick to respond to the scene. Unfortunately, the 10-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the location of the crash. The 12-year-old girl was taken by MediFlight to OU Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City, where she remains in critical condition. KFOR reported that the accident happened just after 7:10 p.m. on the same county roads.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is likely to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the crash. It's a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with operating off-road vehicles, especially when minors are involved. As the community grapples with this tragedy, questions around safety protocols and supervision in such activities are expected to come under scrutiny. "The vehicle lost control due to excessive speed and ultimately rolled," according to a statement by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol referenced in an article by Oklahoman.
