
Following a disturbing incident in Hamtramck this week, a 15-year-old has been taken into custody in connection with a double shooting that injured two fellow teens, a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy. As reported by The Detroit News, the victims were injured near the Hamtramck Housing Commission complex on Monday. The girl was shot in the head and the boy in the torso, but both are expected to recover.
According to FOX 2 Detroit, Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri expressed his distress over the situation, particularly since the victims and alleged shooter are acquainted which raises concerns about potential retaliation the incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on Dyar Street near Carpenter. Hamtramck police acted swiftly, arriving at the scene where the teens were injured and providing immediate aid, and they now have the alleged shooter and the relevant firearm in custody.
"The community can rest assured that the cycle of violence can be broken. We are committed to ensuring the safety and well being of our residents and will tirelessly pursue anyone who seeks to harm and disrupt the community's peace," said Chief Altaheri, as mentioned in a statement by Audacy. With the suspect's identity and any relationship to the victims being withheld, information regarding the motive or circumstances leading up to the shooting remain limited.
Hamtramck's aggravated assault numbers have remained steady in recent years, but incidents involving youth violence still alarm the community. In response to Monday’s shooting, Chief Altaheri and resident Taisha Duhart emphasized the need to address the causes of youth violence. Additional patrols have been assigned to monitor the area as a precaution.
