An 18-year-old has been arrested on murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting of another teen in San Marcos. Police took Chad Lee-Gardner into custody late Monday in Austin in a collaborative effort that included the Texas Rangers, as reported by CBS Austin. The incident, which occurred early Sunday morning, claimed the life of recent San Marcos High School graduate, 18-year-old Andrew Farias.
Found on Rocky Road around 1 a.m., Farias suffered a fatal gunshot wound following what was described as an altercation. Uhland Police Department indicated that following the altercation, the firearm was introduced, and Lee-Gardner subsequently fled before the arrival of law enforcement. Investigations into the shooting are still active, with local authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
San Marcos CISD, where both young men recently graduated, sent a message to families mourning the loss of Farias, whom they referred to as one of our beloved Rattlers. The district also announced available counseling services for those affected by the incident, according to CBS Austin.
In a tribute from friends and family, Farias was remembered as the "light of the room," a notable sentiment echoing the heartbreaking reality of potential unrealized due to senseless violence. Lorenzo Martinez, a friend of Farias, conveyed his admiration and grief in a statement obtained by WFAA, saying, "He wanted to continue his education. He wanted to get his degree and be successful in his life. And, you know, now he doesn’t have the chance to do that." Martinez is advocating for change to prevent future tragic events tied to celebrations.
Shannon Vasquez, the victim's mother, provided a heartfelt statement to WFAA, expressing her deep loss. "No words can describe this pain I’m feeling. I lost my best friend. I love all my children but Andrew held a special place in my heart," she said. Vasquez's reflection on her son's aspirations and his impact on those around him served as a painful reminder of a young life cut short and the void left within a community.
