A late-night incident on Thursday at Wolf Lake resulted in the death of a 2-year-old boy and the dramatic rescue of two men, as revealed in body camera footage released by Michigan State Police. According to FOX 17, the submerged vehicle was located several feet underwater at a public boat launch when MSP troopers and other officers arrived on the scene, with one man standing on the car in the dark water.
The troopers, alongside other law enforcement agencies, braved the approximately 40-degree temperatures, as noted by WZZM 13, to rescue a man who could not swim. The vehicle had reportedly veered off the roadway into the lake, with the Muskegon County Sheriff's Office attributing the crash to the driver's unfamiliarity with the area and ruling out drug and alcohol use as contributing factors in the accident.
Rescue efforts commenced around 11 p.m. with multiple agencies responding to the distress call at the Wolf Lake Boat Launch in Egelston Township. The body camera footage captured officers asking witnesses for the location of the car in the water and later shows them aiding the stranded individual back to shore. Despite their efforts, the 2-year-old child, who had been given immediate attention by first responders, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital as reported by WILX.
Assistance at the scene included the Michigan State Police, Fruitport Township Police, and the Norton Shores Dive Team, among others, as per WZZM 13. The remaining survivors' conditions were not immediately available, but they were rescued from the perilous situation.
