The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is taking proactive steps to ensure travelers are prepared for the sweltering summer ahead, particularly during this weekend's forecasted triple-digit temperatures. In recognition of the Heat Awareness Week from May 5-9, they emphasize the paramount importance of hydration: "Always bring extra water. For you, your passengers and any pets," a safety tip that should not be taken lightly, especially when traversing the unpredictable Arizonan landscape, according to a news release from ADOT.
With the likelihood of car troubles escalating under the intense heat and the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke looming, the ADOT does not only stress the significance of carrying water but also outlines essential vehicle maintenance recommendations to prevent such dire situations, which include ensuring vehicle’s A/C is working, checking the vehicle's battery, topping off coolant levels, and verifying tire pressure to diminish the risk of a blowout, as shared by ADOT recently.
ADOT encourages road trippers to prepare for unexpected delays caused by incidents such as crashes or brush fires. To mitigate these risks, packing an emergency kit is advised, equipped with necessities such as extra water, healthy snacks, a fully charged cell phone and battery charger, a first-aid kit, sun protection items like sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat, prescription medication, and a reliable flashlight with batteries, all aimed at ensuring safety and comfort during unforeseen delays on the road.
ADOT points the public towards resources such as the Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, the AZ511 app available on both Apple and Android devices, and the traditional yet dependable 511 travel information hotline.
