The Akron Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in identifying individuals caught on camera installing illicit devices designed to steal unsuspecting customers' credit card information stealthily. These skimmer devices were installed on point-of-sale pads at multiple Save-A-Lot locations across the city, as detailed in a recent social media post by the APD. Cities afflicted by this criminal activity include Akron and Barberton, with incidents reported on Tallmadge Avenue, South Arlington, and at another Save-A-Lot location in Barberton.
Authorities are pulling out all the stops, equipping civilians with multiple avenues through which they can deliver tips anonymously. Observing the necessity of communal effort, Detective Sgt. M. Joyner, whose information was shared alongside a plea for public assistance, stands ready at 330-375-2490, waiting for citizens to come forward with any information they may have. Installed by the suspects, as seen on the cameras, these skimmer devices pose a sharp risk to the financial welfare of everyday people. The APD Tip Line at 330-375-2TIP; Summit County Crimestoppers, Inc. at 330-434-COPS (2677); and the convenience of text messaging tips to 274637 (CRIMES) with the keyword TIPSCO, further demonstrate the police department's resolve to foster connectivity and protection within the community.
In alignment with contemporary modalities of interaction, the Akron PD encourages users to download their app to submit information or text Tips411. Alternatively, links available on their website at www.AkronCops.org serve as conduits to justice. The department strongly advises against posting personal information in public comments on social media and suggests using direct messaging if personal data must be shared.
