As Arizona prepares to face the sweltering season ahead, state agencies are banding together to remind residents about the risks of extreme heat and how to protect against its effects. Governor Katie Hobbs has officially declared May 5th to 9th as Heat Awareness Week, an initiative supported by a robust coalition of more than a dozen partners, reports the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Throughout this week, the focus is on spreading key knowledge and strategies to help citizens combat heat-related illnesses. The campaign advises staying hydrated, finding shade, keeping an eye on at-risk individuals, and recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. A new centralized online resource, heat.az.gov, launched by the ADHS to consolidate vital information and tools, addresses a variety of heat safety topics. Dr. Eugene Livar, the state’s Chief Heat Officer, underscored the significance of the website, "This website will permit all Arizonans to access the vital resources they need to stay protected from the heat." Each day of Heat Awareness Week is stamped with a unique theme, such as Health, Environment/Weather, Awareness, and Take Action, as reported by the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Organizations across Arizona are rallying to amplify prevention tips and highlight available resources. The Heat Awareness Week schedule is crafted to inform Arizonans using an acronym that represents each core aspect of heat safety: (H.E.A.T.). Monday begins with Health, Tuesday turns to Environment/Weather, Wednesday to Awareness, Thursday is about Taking Action, and Friday rounds off the campaign with a Summary Overview.

The initiative is part of the Governor’s Extreme Heat Preparedness Plan, with involvement from diverse groups including the Arizona Office of Tourism, Arizona State University, and various municipalities and counties such as Maricopa and Pima, along with the faith-based and emergency response communities. These partners have joined forces to ensure that the right information reaches Arizona residents throughout the blistering summer months. Jenna Cooper from the ADHS encouraged everyone to follow the partners on social media and to use the hashtag #HeatAwarenessWeek to further spread the word.
