In a move addressing the child care needs of those who care for our youngest and most vulnerable, the Arizona Department of Economic Security has unveiled the Bright Futures AZ Scholarship. This initiative aims to grant early childhood educators, a means to ensure their children are well looked after, while they facilitate the growth of others. The newly announced scholarship, fueled by a $1 million allocation from the American Rescue Plan Act, targets educators burdened by both the responsibility of educating children and the need to manage their child care dilemmas.
"Early childhood educators are integral for ensuring Arizona’s parents can work, further their careers and pursue higher education knowing their children are cared for," said DES Director Michael Wisehart in a statement reported by the Arizona Department of Economic Security. Wisehart underlined that it is equally essential to support child care providers so they can continue their critical work without undue stress. Certified and licensed programs in a contract with DES were informed about this opportunity earlier this month and are currently invited to apply.
The real-world implications of this scholarship are far-reaching. An estimated 170 educators will benefit, receiving $500 per month per eligible educator from July this year until June 2026. To qualify, educators must have children of their own who are either infants or toddlers, or kids aged 3-5 years with a delay or disability. Furthermore, these applicants must be Lead or Assistant Teachers with a Household Income that falls under 85% State Median Income, and they should not be current recipients of DES Child Care Assistance.
The awards, which are anticipated to be announced coming June, bring a sigh of relief to those who have dedicated their lives to the education of children, yet struggle with their own child care needs. For families still in need of assistance, the DES child care assistance program, though currently overwhelmed with a waiting list, and services through Child Care Resource & Referral offer alternative support.
