Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is beefing up its terminals, with a new Atrium Infill Project that's set to add 12,000 square feet to help manage the ever-increasing number of air travelers. Announced as part of the Journey With AUS Expansion Program, this project aims to improve passenger queuing areas for TSA security as well as baggage claim facilities, as detailed on the city's official website. The move comes after TSA lines were seen stretching out the door in 2022, showing a clear need for expanded infrastructure at the Barbara Jordan Terminal.

The construction will see the current open-air atrium above the baggage area filled in, which is set to house the additional space for security screening and baggage claim enhancements, and with the airport's growth steady it has been quite clear for some time the expansion was a must to keep pace; it's going to meet Austin Energy Green Building 3-star sustainability standards too. While the work may cause some temporary visual and auditory disruptions with construction walls and noise, the airport assures there will be no impact on TSA security screening capacity or flight schedules, as mentioned in the Austintexas.gov news release.

The Atrium Infill Project isn't just about functionality: it also includes an artistic angle with a new permanent installation from local muralist Josef Kristofoletti and artist Matthew Mazzotta. And while the work is being done, Austin's beloved Barbara Jordan statue, located in the baggage claim area, will be protected from the hustle and bustle, only to be re-unveiled once the dust settles in 2026, celebrating the project's completion.

Funded in part by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the project tags at about $50 million with Whiting-Turner taking the lead as the prime contractor and Corgan on the design; it's a strategic move for the expanding needs of the Central Texas region, a vision that's shared and supported by the Journey With AUS program, and when the future new Arrivals and Departures Hall throws open its doors in, the earliest 2030, this project will have provided the necessary breathing room for an airport in full stride.
